  18. Well, the GEnie-Usenet link is down.  So much for all the doom-
  19. and-gloom-sayers in news.misc who figured that Usenet is too
  20. disorganized to accomplish anything.  I'd say we were pretty
  21. successful (this time).

  23. Some of you might be interested in the events that led me to post
  24. about Dave Small's idea in such a strongly-worded way.  Also, it
  25. is my only chance to ``talk'' to Dave directly since he's not
  26. answering his mail (or is it just my mail :-)  No surprise there.
  27.  
  28. I had known about the Usenet-GEnie link for several days before
  29. it was actually announced.  When I was first told it existed (not
  30. many details were given) and I thought the link was a great idea.
  31. It presented another place to send news.  After all, isn't the
  32. purpose of Usenet to be a free-flow of information,
  33. spreading as much information, around to as many sites, as
  34. possible?
  35.  
  36. What I didn't know then was that the Usenet news being placed on
  37. GEnie was being covered by their copyright (or at least the GEnie
  38. people figured the news was now copyrighted).  I discovered this
  39. fact the day of Dave's ``the link is up'' posting.  In a
  40. discussion about a friend trying to obtain several of my Usenet
  41. postings from the Usenet-uplink area of GEnie, GEnie customer
  42. service people threatened to ``sue'' any site found posting news
  43. that GEnie had received from Usenet *after* GEnie had received it
  44. ('cause the Usenet news now ``belonged'' to GEnie).
  45.  
  46. Before all you amateur copyright lawyers send follow-up flames,
  47. let me assure you that I realize the ridiculousness and
  48. unenforceabililty of this situation.  GEnie *can't* copyright
  49. something that's already in the public domain.  (And I probably
  50. got stuck talking to a tired, over-zealous GEnie representative,
  51. rather than an ``informed'' person.)  But, the confusion
  52. surrounding this situation on GEnie's part was enough to get me
  53. worried.
  54.  
  55. Next I received some reliable information that Dave was on the
  56. verge of licensing the ``link technology'' to GEnie.  If we
  57. didn't act very fast to convince Dave to rethink the link, it
  58. wouldn't matter if *his* atari newsgroup-GEnie link were shut
  59. down, 'cause GEnie would be busy draining (and copyrighting) the
  60. rest of Usenet.  (And Dave, Mark Booth did NOT give me this
  61. information, so you can start talking to him again.)
  62.  
  63. Next, Dave's ``the link is up'' posting carried the tone of `the
  64. link is carved in stone, the only thing that I'll change is
  65. whether individual's postings are removed'.  After careful
  66. consideration of all the events, I was convinced me that I had to
  67. spurred me to strike in the quickest, hardest manner I
  68. could.
  69.  
  70. I believed I didn't have much time to waste with gentle, ``let's
  71. think about this guys'' letters.  Sorry my strongly worded
  72. posting irritated Dave, but it had the desired effect very
  73. quickly:  mobilize as many people as possible to convince Dave to
  74. re-think the link.  While I knew that many of you would post
  75. loud, angry responses, I knew that many more would write quiet,
  76. well-reasoned responses (showing *both* sides of the argument) in
  77. answer to my posting.  I believe my ``inciteful'' posting put
  78. many, many more reasoned responses in Dave's mailbox than if I
  79. had written an easily-ignored, calmly-worded appeal to the net.
  80. I wanted to spur as many people to respond as possible, and I
  81. think I was successful.
  82.  
  83. That's not to say I was just in this ``battle'' to raise the cry
  84. and then leave.  No sir.  I was prepared for the long haul.  Dave
  85. actually surprised me when he withdrew the link so suddenly after
  86. only a few days of protest.  His first posting led me to believe
  87. that the link would be here for a long time no matter what.
  88.  
  89. So now I don't have to write to the management of GEnie, and I
  90. don't have to organize petitions, and I don't have to appeal to
  91. sites feeding GEnie to stop.  There was even a movement to change
  92. news sending software so that it attached ``copylefts'' to *whole
  93. batches* of news, thus preventing GEnie from using many, many
  94. postings.
  95.  
  96. Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation must be
  97. commended for coming up with, and organizing the execution of,
  98. that last idea.  I'd also like to thank Richard for placing the
  99. FSF's lawyers at my disposal.  I'm very happy I didn't need to
  100. use them.
  101.  
  102. I'd like to thank Dave for giving the net the best Christmas
  103. present we could ever have wanted:  peace for the present and
  104. hope for the future.
  105.  
  106. I'd like to go on record as saying I'm NOT against sites that
  107. make a profit from Usenet, nor do I have many problems with read-
  108. only sites.  I do, however, have serious problems with any site
  109. that tries to copyright my (or anyone's) postings and prevent the
  110. dissemination of information.
  111.  
  112. I'd like to work with Dave to make the GEnie-Usenet link viable
  113. and useful (for both sides).  If Dave declines my offer (and I
  114. expect he will :-) then I hope he at least posts his link ideas
  115. for the net for discussion *before* implementation.  It would be
  116. even better if he accepted the help and support of the many, many
  117. knowledgeable people who volunteered it this week.
  118.  
  119. Well, that's all I have to say on the topic.  The rest of you can
  120. continue this discussion (as I know you will).  Don't let it
  121. degenerate into too much name-calling.  :-)

  153. I don't think this needs to be done. When unsharing the amiga files on the ST,
  154.  everything
  155. with foo.c,v worked well. But we should consider what is to be done with long
  156.  suffixes, i.e.
  157. foo.sh,v becomes foo.sh, , and what becomes of foo.bar,v ???
  158.

  181. A port of Walter (?) Tichy's RCS for the Amiga was recently posted to
  182. comp.?sources|binaries?.amiga. Unfortunately, all the sources were in
  183. RCS files, and I don't have an Amiga to run the binaries.
  184. (Besides, two of the source parts were missing, anyway... 8-? )

  186. If anyone is doing such a port for the ST, which IMHO should not be too
  187. difficult, lots of us would appreciate a release to the c.?b|s?.a.st
  188. newsgroups, I think.

  212. important contribution to expanding this news group.

  214. However, I would prefer to have GEnie allow two-way exchanges.
  215. Perhaps if the GEnie people see that they can benefit from the
  216. inclusion of the mesages, they will reciprocate and allow their
  217. users to respond to this group as well.
  218.  
  219. I know that my contributions are small, but (in my humble opinion),
  220. I think they are positive.  Somehow it rankles to think that someone
  221. else is taking my work, freely given, and translating it into a profit.
  222. Moreover, they are imposing their own form of restriction by imposing
  223. an "anthology copyright" which some folks interpret (incorrectly, I
  224. think) as restricting them from passing it on.
